What Are the Main Differences between English and Dutch Grammar

What Are the Main Differences between English and Dutch Grammar Get to know these 5 Key Grammatical Differences between the Dutch and the English Language Chapters1. Word order - one of the biggest grammatical differences between Dutch and English2. Different Usage of Verb Tenses in English and Dutch Grammar3. The Lack of Auxiliaries in Dutch Grammar4. Singular Pronouns in Dutch: ‘Iedereen’ is Used for Both ‘Anyone’ and ‘Everyone’5. The pronoun ‘Het’ (‘It’) is Used for Both Singular and Plural Forms of NounsDid you know that Dutch and English are actually very close relatives? Since Dutch and English are both West Germanic languages, the two have many (grammatical) similarities. It is even said that Dutch is the easiest foreign language to learn for English speakers because of the big resemblance between the two. Were you aware, for example, that many English words actually have been adopted from the Dutch language? And similarly, the Dutch use a lot of English words in their day-to-day conversations, many of which have even been included in the Dutch dictionary. Click here to learn more on English words with a Dutch origin. So even if Dutch is not your native language, you haven’t studied it and you haven’t even been to the Netherlands yet, you might speak more Dutch than you think. Just have a look at some of these words: appel, peer, tomaat, banaan, koekje, schoen, blauw, groen, bruin, rood. Can you guess what they are?‘Koekje erbij?’ Photo via visualhunt.com.And what is more, if you find yourself really struggling to get your point across in Dutch, it is perfectly acceptable to just throw in a couple of English terms, the Dutch do this themselves all the time anyway.Of course, as with any two languages, there are also many differences between the two. Fairly obvious ones are of course differences in vocabulary, pronunciation, spelling, phrases, expressions, etc. And although the basic grammar of both of these languages is similar, there are certainly differences there, too.If you speak English and want to learn Dutch, it might be a good idea to study some of the main differences betw een English and Dutch grammar. And you’re in luck because that happens to be the main focus of this article. So, let’s get on with it, shall we? Word order - one of the biggest grammatical differences between Dutch and EnglishOne of the most significant differences between English and Dutch grammar is word order. Both Dutch and English use the SVO pattern (subject â€" verb â€" object) as a basic sentence structure. Still, the word order that is u sed in the two languages does not always follow the same pattern.Finite and non-finite verbsOne of the main differences in word order is that in Dutch the finite verb is separated from the non-finite verb. The two are separated by adverbials. To make this a bit more clear, let's use an example: ‘Kees gaat morgen winkelen in Rotterdam’.Following the Dutch word order, this would be translated into ‘Kees is going tomorrow shopping in Rotterdam’. Of course, using correct English, you would keep the finite and non-finite verb together (‘Kees is going shopping in Rotterdam tomorrow’). Although this sentence is an exception, in most cases the finite verb is placed at the end of the sentence in Dutch.Sentences that don’t start with a subjectAnother difference in word order occurs when sentences don’t start with the sentence’s subject. So, for example, you can say ‘on Friday we eat Belgian fries’ (which was actually one of few traditions in my childhood home). In Dutch, this would translate to ‘op vrijdag eten we Belgische frietjes’. If you know how to speak a bit of Dutch, you would have noticed that the subject ‘we’ and the verb ‘eat’ have swapped places here.Belgian fries on Friday. Photo via visualhunt.com.Sentences that start with subordinate clausesA similar difference in word order occurs when a sentence starts with a subordinate clause. For example: ‘if you’re going to Holland, I’ll come with you’. Or in Dutch: ‘als jij naar Holland gaat, kom ik met je mee’. Using the Dutch word order, the English translation would be: ‘if you’re to Holland going, come I with you’.2. Different Usage of Verb Tenses in English and Dutch GrammarBoth Dutch and English have four basic verb tenses: the present simple, past simple, present perfect and the past perfect. However, these tenses are not always used in the same way in both languages. A common mistake that Dutch people make while they speak English is using the present perf ect where the past simple should be used. For example, in English you would say: ‘she learned some Afrikaans yesterday’. But a Dutch person might easily make the mistake of using the present perfect here and say ‘she has learned some Afrikaans yesterday’. This is because of how you would structure this sentence according to Dutch grammar rules. In Dutch you would use the present perfect: ‘zij heeft gister Afrikaans geleerd’.Another common mix-up of tenses between Dutch and English is using the present simple instead of the future simple. Whereas in Dutch, using the present simple in ‘I teach you how to speak Dutch tomorrow’ is completely correct, in English, the future simple would be used: ‘I will teach you how to speak Dutch tomorrow’.Furthermore, don’t be surprised when a Dutch person tells you ‘I live in Utrecht since 2012’. In Dutch, the present simple is used in this kind of sentence (‘ik woon in Utrecht sinds 2012’), but in English, the present pe rfect should be used (‘I have lived in Utrecht since 2012’). The Lack of Auxiliaries in Dutch GrammarAs opposed to English, Dutch does not use any auxiliary to form an interrogative sentence. So to form a question in Dutch, there is no need to add an auxiliary like ‘do’ to the sentence. And since auxiliaries aren’t present in the Dutch language, the use of ‘do’ and ‘did’ might be a bit tricky for a Dutch beginner learning to speak English. Therefore, you might hear a Dutch person say: ‘like you this language course?’ (‘vind je deze talencursus leuk?’) instead of ‘do you like this language course?’What is interesting is that back in the day there was no need for adding auxiliaries in English either. It might seem very weird to you now to form an interrogative sentence without an auxiliary, but just look at back at texts of Shakespeare, for example, and you will see that the Dutch system is used there. (Side note, this might be an interesting topic for a thesis for any of you out there looking for one. Or am I the only one interested to know why this has changed?)4. Singular Pronouns in Dutch: ‘Iedereen’ is Used for Both ‘Anyone’ and ‘Everyone’Whereas the English make a distinction between ‘everyone’ and ‘anyone’, the Dutch just use ‘iedereen’ for both. So if you want to say ‘anyone can learn a foreign language’ or ‘it seems like everyo ne is learning foreign languages these days’, in Dutch you would use ‘iedereen’ in both cases.Similarly, ‘alles’, is used for both ‘everything’ and ‘anything’. So again using an example, you would use ‘alles’ in both ‘everything is written in Flemish’ or ‘I can’t understand anything written in Flemish’.Even though ‘iedereen’ clearly refers to multiple people, it is considered to be a singular pronoun in Dutch. The same goes for ‘alles’: although it refers to multiple things, it’s considered a singular pronoun. Therefore, you say 'iedereen is' en 'alles is' instead of 'iedereen zijn' en 'alles zijn'.‘Anyone’ and ‘everyone’ in English are considered to be singular pronouns too, however, in conversational English you will sometimes come across a sentence like ‘everyone is showing off their language skills’. In Dutch, albeit formal or informal, you will never come across something like this.Learn all about these and other Dutch gramm ar rules in your Dutch lessons!5. The pronoun ‘Het’ (‘It’) is Used for Both Singular and Plural Forms of NounsIf a Dutch person comes up to you and says ‘it are good quality tulips’, you’ll probably have to try hard to suppress a grin. This is how we say it in Dutch though, as a plural form of ‘het’ does not exist. In Dutch, you would say, ‘het zijn goede kwaliteit tulpen’.Lots of Dutch tulip bulbs at the flower market in Amsterdam. Photo via visualhunt.com.Okay, if it’s one of those annoying salesmen at the flower market in Amsterdam, you’re allowed to let out a little grin. But in any other situation, keep in mind that translating ‘het zijn’ into ‘they are’ can be tricky for the Dutch who are just starting to learn English. It’s not that using ‘they are’ in these cases doesn’t exist in Dutch. However, this is done only when ‘they’ is not directly linked to a noun in the same sentence. ‘They are’ is only used referring back to a noun , for example in a previous sentence. So for example: ‘het zijn goede kwaliteit tulpen’ (‘they are high quality tulips’), and ‘ze zijn van goede kwaliteit’ (‘they are of good quality’). Notice that in the second sentence, the noun, ‘tulpen’, is not present. We hope you enjoyed our blog. Why not check out the whole series on Dutch Grammer. :)

How to Deal With Group Projects

How to Deal With Group Projects Everybody has their own views on the quintessential group projects that are inevitable throughout school. While some students claim it makes the assignments more difficult to complete successfully, others feel the group aspect creates a safety net that will make failing far less likely to happen. One thing that appears to come up frequently, however, is that every group tends to hold a mix of these views especially when the groups are randomly assigned and students cant just gravitate toward their friends. Having clashing perspectives on how the work will get done can often be what hurts a group the most, so communication is key. Without it, your groups mission will never be accomplished. Along with communication comes a few steps that are necessary to follow if you want your project to be a winning one. You may also want to check out this information on the benefits of group studyas well. Establishing Roles: This should be done very early on and in regards to every aspect of the project. For instance, the very first time your group gets together and discusses the goals at hand, split up responsibilities related to researching information, acquiring supplies, gathering ideas, and whatever else may be on your collective plates. This will ensure you get off to a strong and organized start as a group but that is just the beginning. Dividing up the roles is a consistent effort that needs to be carried through every step of the way. When you find yourselves at the next stage of the project and facing a new set of tasks, you must continue to assign them accordingly. Going along with this, identify who is best at doing what, or who has the most desire to take on certain responsibilities. This will guarantee each and every task is being completed in the best possible way by someone who genuinely cares about it and/or has the necessary skills to do it. More over, clearly split ting up tasks will make it certain that no work is being repeated. Once all of these roles are defined and put in place, you will be able to get through each phase of the project as smoothly as possible. Here are 6 habits to become a more organized studentthat you may want to take a look at as well. Set Up Regular Meetings: Just saying things like, well talk about it sometime next week, or lets figure it out whenever we see each other next, is not going to keep things moving efficiently. Moreover, this will keep your group farther and farther from productive results. Trying to establish meeting times in a sporadic fashion will not work. As a group, you must talk with each other to identify when everybody is available and when they are not, and then plan your consistent meeting times accordingly. Set in stone as many of the details as you can the time, the length of time, the place, what materials to bring, etc. This way, group members will always know when they are checking in with each other and have more stable deadlines as to when assignments need to be done. More importantly, this will minimize any possible fears of being out-of-communication with each other. Exchange and Keep Handy Contact Information: If youre really putting effort into this project, odds are you are going to have various inquiries and opinions to share with your group members at all times, not just when you meet. That is why being able to comfortably email, call, or text each other is crucial. Without these open lines of specific communication, you will be making it a lot harder on yourselves to get things done in an efficient manner. Holding onto doubts and unused ideas without sharing them with anybody can significantly hurt a project, so you and your group members must outwardly make this contact information available to each other immediately so everyone feels free to use them and comfortable doing so. The last thing anyone wants is for something to go wrong because members were too nervous or lazy to contact one another. Monitor Progress and Goals: Just as you would independently on a project, keep track of how far along your group is in all of the various steps. Together, set deadlines for when each persons specific tasks should be done in order to move forward at a good pace. With these deadlines set, you shouldnt feel hesitant to check in with your fellow members and find out where they are in terms of progress. If they are struggling, help them out; perhaps switch tasks if you collectively feel certain people can cover them better. It is pivotal you treat everyones tasks with as much importance as you would your own because they are all leading up to your groups goals a.k.a. your goals. That is not to say you should unnecessarily take over other peoples tasks when not asked, but you should openly keep the discussion going regarding them so all of you are on the same page because ultimately, this is one giant effort that culminates in a result that belongs to all of you equally. Give the project the care it deserves. Finally, dont forget to have some fun with it and get to know your group members. If you treat this experience solely as a forced collaboration with people you just dont care to invest your time in, then all of these steps will be quite difficult to carry through. Dont write anyone off without giving them a chance who knows, you might make a few friends along the way. Even regardless of whether or not you keep in touch with these people after the project is over, youre bound to produce better results if you enjoy your time with them during it. That is one big plus of group projects; they keep things much more interesting than if you were working alone. Make the most of the situation and you may find yourself eagerly awaiting the next one. Effects of Expat Life on Education and Their Solutions - Introvert Whisperer

Introvert Whisperer / Effects of Expat Life on Education and Their Solutions - Introvert Whisperer Effects of Expat Life on Education and Their Solutions Education is essential for success, and you have to ensure that your kids get the best. One of the major concerns for any parent considering moving abroad with family is how this will impact on their childrens academic performance. Unfortunately, the country youre moving to may not uphold the same values as your country. What Are The Expat Life Effects On Education? Curriculum Changes Moving to a new school isnt easy, the school may be using a different curriculum, and they may have covered some aspects that your child hasnt. The downside of expat life is that your child may get exposed to an entirely new curriculum and topics that didnt feature in schools back home.   Also, they may end up repeating what they learned in their former school severally. And whats the way out? Opt for an institution that runs the International Baccalaureate program. You can as well enroll them for online homework help classes, and this will help them to catch up well. Social And Cultural Differences Life in a foreign country can be tough for kids. Blending in with different people who speak a different language can be difficult.   Although getting along with others will become more comfortable with time, before this happens, dont expect much learning to take place. In most cases, kids will focus much of their energy on social acceptance, and this means that they learn very little. As a parent, sometimes this expat life might get you thinking, if my kid has problems adapting to a new environment and takes longer to get used to a different culture, can I pay someone to do my homework online? The answer is yes; Online class taker websites have  many professionals who can be of help to your kid(s). They can assist in any of their assignments, test, project, discussion and many more. To deal with the issue, consider schools with more international students, and this can make your child blend in quickly without feeling intimidated. What Are The Options For Expat Children? Local Schools Most of the local schools conduct teachings in the local dialect, and English may be taught as a second language. As such, your kid may be put in lower classes to get to earn the local dialect effectively. However, if you plan to stay there for a long time, the benefits of a local school may outweigh the cons in the long run. Besides, children can easily understand new languages within a short period. International Schools The benefits of taking your child to an international school are numerous. For instance, kids can grow in culturally diverse environments, and this lessens the expat life effects on education. Such schools follow an internationally recognized curriculum as your child can continue with their education without significant changes. More so, international schools emphasize on extracurricular activities, and this prompts kids to be all-round. Homeschooling If you wish to stay overseas for a short period, then homeschooling is ideal.   However, it isnt for everyone; it requires lots of commitment from the parents. Again, this type of schooling uses a pre-approved curriculum and comes with lots of educational freedom. The learning hours depend on the parent, and the learning schedule is designed to fit in with the family life. Conclusion Expat life affects education in many ways, and its one of the things to consider when moving to a new country. There are many expat life effects on learning, but this is not to say that it doesnt come with benefits. Children can easily acquire a different perspective of knowledge in such locations. If you travel a lot, ensure that theres a level of continuity in the education that your child gets.

Should I Go to Gonzaga University

Should I Go to Gonzaga University Katherine earned her bachelors degree in English from Gonzaga University. She specializes in test prep tutoring, American Literature tutoring, and a number of other subjects. Below, she shares her experience at Gonzaga University: Describe the campus setting and transportation options. Katherine: Gonzaga Universitys campus is located within the Logan neighborhood of Spokane, about a 10-minute bike ride or 20-minute walk from downtown. The campus is closed, meaning it has defined boundaries but no fence to separate the surrounding neighborhood. I always felt safe on campus, though I would recommend traveling with a group at night when venturing further into the neighborhood. There is a bus system in Spokane, but the city is great for bicycles as well. Most students live in the neighborhood next to campus, so theres no urgent need for a car. How available are the professors, academic advisers, and teaching assistants? Katherine:At Gonzaga University, the professors and advisers are always available to students. The faculty is very present and genuine about their purpose at the university. Many faculty enjoy teaching and try to engage students on both a personal and academic level. Office hours, coffee meetings, and spontaneous meetings in the hallway are frequent occurrences. How would you describe the dorm liferooms, dining options, location, socialization opportunities with other students? Katherine:Its hard not to be involved at Gonzaga. There are so many opportunities to meet people in the dorms, at the dining hall, and through clubs and activities. All dorms are within a 10-minute walk to classes, the fitness center, and dining services. Which majors/programs are best represented and supported? Katherine:While Gonzaga University has a large nursing program, engineering school, and business school presence, the College of Arts and Sciences makes up the majority of programs. I studied English with a focus on creative writing, because I am passionate about words and hearing peoples stories. The university did an excellent job supporting my program, both inside and outside of the classroom. I had well-published, knowledgeable, and passionate professors. They encouraged me to get outside of the classroom and engage in literary activities, both on campus and in the Spokane community. I was granted the opportunity to attend conferences across the country and work in publishing, both of which would not have been possible without the support of the English department. How easy or difficult was it for you to meet people and make friends as a freshman? Does Greek life play a significant role in the campus social life? Katherine:Gonzaga University does not have Greek life represented on campus. Its possible to have multiple friend-groups and connections through a variety of activities and social groups around campus. There are so many options for all types of interests to be involved and social on campus. How helpful are the Career Centerand other student support services? Katherine:The Career Center is helpful if you take the initiative to actively seek their advice. Other student support services are excellent as well, including the health center, counseling, and university ministry. How are the various study areas such aslibraries, the student union, and dorm lounges? Katherine:There are a multitude of study spots around campus, especially since the new student center was completed in 2015. The library is open 24-hours and has a plethora of cubbies, chairs, and study rooms. The dorm common spaces are also good for studying if you dont mind a little background noise. Describe the surrounding town. Katherine:There are great things to do in Spokane if you take the time to explore. Within a 20-minute drive out of the city, there are beautiful places to enjoy hiking, skiing, rock climbing, and paddling. The city of Spokane offers poetry slams, indie bands, and cute coffee shops to explore. Its a very active city with lots of fitness gyms, yoga studios, and running events. The performing arts center downtown brings in big names and shows, so theres never a dull weekend in Spokane. How big or small is the student body? Were you generally pleased or displeased with the typical class sizes? Katherine:The student body at Gonzaga is considered mid-size with a small feel. There are about 4,500 undergraduate students. The nature of the campus is that you can always go somewhere on campus and know someone. The class sizes are excellent. The biggest class I had was 35 students and the smallest was only three. Most classes are 14-20 students, which means you really get to know your peers and can access the professor easily. Describe one memorable experience with a professor and/or class. Perhaps one you loved the most or one youregretthe most. Katherine:One memorable experience was in my human ecology class. We ventured down to the Spokane River during lab and trounced around in the mud and shallows finding water bugs to study. Since I took a class for non-science majors, we all had a blast learning outside of the classroom. Check out Katherines tutoring profile. Typical narratives of South American history often start with western concepts such as the “pre-Columbian” Americas â€" this brief history lesson will instead start by putting the very noti on of a continent into question. From the Andean mountains to the Tierra del Fuego archipelago, from countries like Paraguay and Bolivia to Peru and Uruguay â€" you might think you know what the continent of South America is. However, the seven continent model the majority of countries around the world teach in their curricula wasn’t actually proposed until around the 1950s. While the countries that constitute the South American continent share many differences, including the language that is spoken in each, the geographical term that binds them depends more on their cultural similarities rather than precise science. These intra-state differences can be staggering â€" just looking at how many languages are spoken on the continent can give you the right picture. While Brazilians communicate in Portuguese, Guyana, Suriname and French Guiana’s primary languages are English, Dutch and French, respectively. Besides the various indigenous languages that can be found throughout the regio n, many of the countries which speak the same language hold major differences. Chilean Spanish, for example, can be much different from Colombian Spanish. The reason why it is so important to highlight the disparities between these countries is because it has contributed to the wide variation of dishes in the region. Not only is it home to dishes influenced by ancient American peoples, but also by differences in biodiversity, colonizers and immigrants.Because of the variation in culture and language, food culture on the continent spans from seafood dishes like Peruvian Ceviche all the way to the delectable Uruguayan sandwiches, chivitos.Find cooking courses London on Superprof.Make sure to try some plantain dishes during any South American toursHow is Latin American Food Influenced by South America? In order to explore the food in the region, it’s easiest to start by looking at the regional variations of South American cooking. Whether it’s street food or comfort food, South Ameri can countries often hold some of their most prized recipes in common. One of the best examples can be seen through arepas. Arepas are a cornmeal patties that are fried and typically mixed or served with cheese, beans or meats. You’ll be able to find the best arepas in either Venezuela or Colombia, where it is often hailed in both countries as the national dish. While Venezuelan arepas are typically served similar to a sandwich, filled with ingredients like avocado, cheese and beans â€" Colombian arepas are usually mixed with cheese and meats. While that is by no means an exhaustive list on the regional variations of dishes on the continent, it’s enough to give you a sense of how the many countries of South America tailor many dishes according to their unique diet and agricultural needs. What can also be helpful to understand in your journey to learn more about South American food is how the continent has influenced the rest of Latin America. Looking to Peru, ceviche is to Peruvian food what Machu Picchu is to Peruvian history. The dish is so prized, it has its own national holiday. While you may have tried ceviche in many of the American countries, the dish stands out amongst the standard seafood fare of clam chowder, fish stew or oysters. While the origins of the dish are hotly contested, the recipe is pretty standard, involving a medley of fresh fish, citrus, chili and herbs.Mexico, Caribbean and Central American countries   have all drawn inspiration from this delicious dish. In Mexico, the fresh seafood mix normally utilizes octopus or shrimp and is served on top of a large, circular tortilla chip known as a tostada.Variations of this dish that use black conch can be found in El Salvador and Nicaragua, while in Costa Rica it can often be served with ketchup or mayonnaise. Looking towards the Caribbean, both Cuba and Puerto Rico prepare ceviche with tuna or even coconut milk.Empanadas are another great example of how South American food has spread throughou t Latin America. While the origins of the empanada can be found in Spanish, Italian, French and Arabic cuisine, its early proliferation in South America also led to its spread throughout Central America. In Bolivia, they are actually considered by many to be the national dish. Called Bolivian saltenas, these empanadas are made of wheat flour and filled typically with beef, chicken, and olives. Another variation can be seen with Argentinian empanadas, which can be baked or fried, filled with meat or cheese, and can even be made sweet. Both of these South American empanadas stand in stark contrast with those made in Belize, where empanadas are actually known as “panades” and are, instead, made up of a corn dough called masa. Here, they are normally deep fried and served cabbage and salsa.South American Recipes Around the WorldWhile the popularity of South American food has risen around the world, form Ecuadorian churrasco to the Argentine dulce de leche, many of the dishes that have made the continent notorious around the world haven’t so much been adapted by the locals as they have been celebrated for their uniqueness. The fact of the matter is that much of food that is celebrated as typical of South America has actually been brought about by a mix of ancient food practices with the forces of colonization and immigration. This, however, makes it extremely interesting to compare how different dishes around the world have developed in a similar fashion to the iconic dishes we eat today.Looking back to the wildly delicious and popular empanadas, this dish a diverse number of preparations around the world. In the Philippines, for example, the filling is often enhanced by adding potato or raisins and can even be found in a flakier, fried variety.Looking towards Sicilian cuisine, the preparation is usually sweet and is often referred to as an “impanatiglie.” On the other side of the world, empanadas can often by found in American restaurants in US cities with large, Hispanic communities. Sometimes, it can even be compared to the Middle Eastern fatayer because both dishes can be considered a meat pie.Moving on towards ingredients, while many tend to think of plants like cassava or preparations like hominy when thinking of traditional South American agriculture, plantain probably has the most interesting origin story.Eaten fried, sweet, with beans and rice or with sugar â€" the endless variations of plantain recipes that can be found in South America has solidified the food as a staple ingredient of the continent’s diet. However, the fruit actually made it into the homes of South American families through the African slaves that themselves originally imported them from Southeast Asian countries.Luckily for everyone who loves the starchy fruit, this banana can be found prepared in many different ways throughout the world. While in Central America and the Caribbean, plantain is eaten as a side and prepared by either being fried or boiled, South American countries typically cook it in a crisp-like fashion known as tostones or patacones. In West Africa, however, the plantain can be served with cabbage or fish stew. In the Ivory Coast, aloco typifies a popular way of preparing the banana, fried and mixed with tomato sauce and served with grilled fish.Looking towards India, the plantain chips are actually fried with coconut oil and is a popular snack in the south. Similarly, Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore all have a fried version that is usually served as a dessert. From Lima to Copacabana, South American food and topography is extremely variedTry Some South American Cooking at HomeWhile this is by no means a definitive list of the recipes you should try, this simple list can give you a better idea of the kinds of food you can incorporate into your weekly diet.
